Sensornetze bestehen aus vielen kleinen, drahtlos vernetzten Computern, die mit verschiedenen Fühlern ausgestattet sind (z.B. Licht, Temperatur, Erschütterung, chemische Sensoren). Jeder Sensorknoten kann Daten sammeln, verarbeiten und per Multi-Hop-Kommunikation weiterleiten. Die Energieversorgung erfolgt in den meisten Fällen über Batterien. Da die Sensorknoten nur über sehr begrenzte Ressourcen verfügen und über längere Zeiträume in Betrieb sind, ist eine der Hauptherausforderungen, den Energiebedarf und die Ressourcennutzung im Allgemeinen gering zu halten. Der Einsatz solcher Netze ist vielfältig. Die ersten Prototypen für drahtlose Sensornetze sind für die Umweltüberwachung, Katastrophenverhütung oder für Aufklärungszwecke konzipiert worden ("Smart Dust"-Projekte).
Im Rahmen dieses Praktikums soll ein Testbed aus Sensoren aufgebaut werden. Verschiedene Sensornetz-Technolgien sollen prototypisch in Betrieb genommen (TinyOS und TinyDB) und deren Leistungsfähigkeit z.B. bzgl. Datenrate, Reichweite, Störanfälligkeit, Multi-hop-Fähigkeit, Ad-hoc-Fähigkeit, Skalierbarkeit, Leistungsaufnahme etc. untersucht werden.
